When I use Illustrator or Photoshop, I can't get my shift key to accurately scale images. I delete the illustrator preferences, reboot and it works for about 2-3 minutes and the damn thing goes out again. If Illustrator starts working properly again then throw it away. I just tested it though, you can have them unlinked and still use the shift key to scale proportionally. And happy learning with AE---lot of great people here at The Cow that will be willing to help you out if you get stuck.
